I recently received an e-mail asking for more information about relocation to sustainable communities in Costa Rica. Since I don’t live in a sustainable community, and I have only ever briefly discussed the topic, I decided to do a little bit of research.
One of sustainable communities that kept coming up for Costa Rica was Finca Las
Brisas. The Finca isn’t the cover for some social, political, or philosophical movement; it was simply designed for people who want to develop Costa Rican land in a way that is beneficial to the earth, the wildlife, and the community.
Finca Las Brisas deems themselves an EcoCommunity. The small development contains 25 lots, and everyone works together to strengthen the community, and give back to the land.
Members of the community privately own their own lots and homes, and must build them in a way that meets the ecological guidelines set out by the community. The community aims to work with locals and is very accepting of people from all backgrounds: social, religious, political and spiritual groups freely intermingle.
The community is managed by a homeowners association and there are committees established to govern specific areas. The shared and protected areas in the community are the responsibility of all the members. The point is to have a large shared area, and not individual green lawns. Finca Las Brisas is very focused on its sense of community.
Finca Las Brisas is located 10 minutes away from the north side of Playa Samara, Costa Rica. It is about 2 hours away from the Liberia airport, which receives non-stop flights from Houston, Miami, US Airways and Delta. San Jose is a 5 hour drive away from Finca Las Brisas.
At the moment Finca Las Brisas has about 12 lots available for purchase, ranging from just over to US $100,000 to just under $130,000. With purchase of a lot, you receive access to all the community’s shared properties: a commercial kitchen, yoga spaces, office and laundry facilities, hiking trails, swimming holes, a horse corral and an organic fruit and vegetable farm.
For those looking for sustainable living in Costa Rica, it seems Finca Las Brisas is one of the developments that really has it all together. They are spoken highly of by residents, visitors, real estate agents, green agencies, and most importantly of all, the local community.
The Finca Las Brisas web-site tells the entire story. Check it out by clicking here.
