Isla del Coco Conservation Area Trip – April 2009

Isla del Coco, or Cocos Island as it is commonly called, is one of Costa Rica’s virtually untouched wonders. The island is located 535 kilometers from Costa Rica’s western, Pacific coast, and takes 36 hours by boat to arrive.Cocos island welcome sign

Cocos Island is a National Park, and is now in competition to become one of the world’s new Seven Wonders. You can cast your vote for Cocos by clicking here.

Cocos is especially famous for diving, and the two main companies that sail there, Okeanos and Undersea Hunter, offer a variety of diving trips. But what if you aren’t a diver?

Thankfully the Friends of Isla del Coco Foundation (FAICO) and the Organization for Tropical Studies has a trip that is designed especially for non-divers. Last year was the first year for the educational Cocos excursion aboard the Pacific Explorer, and due to its success, another trip is scheduled for this year.

The trip will last 8 days, and departs from Los Sueños Marina at Playa Herradura, on the central Pacific coast April 25th and returns May 2nd.

The trip is limited to between 60 and 70 passengers, and is designed to educate and raise awareness for the island, above water. Participants will hike to Cocos’ most famous sites and caves, go snorkeling, kayaking, and take boat tours around the island. There will also be informative lectures and videos. Buffet meals will be served three times daily, and two evening concerts are scheduled to be performed by Tico Photo by Diane en route to Cocosmusician Humberto Vargas.

The guided tours and lectures will be given mostly in Spanish, but staff members will be able to provide both English and French translation. The trip is open to people of all ages; activities are on a sign-up basis.

The trip is truly a chance to relax: no phone, no e-mail, no internet, no television. It is a chance to really rest and enjoy the natural beauty of Cocos Island.

The cost of the trip to Coco starts at $1,995 for standard rooms and runs up to  $2,395 for suites. A $300 deposit is required to reserve a spot on the tour. Space is limited to only 60–70 people, so it is best to make a reservation as quickly as possible. For more information, call 2257-9257 or visit www.cocosisland.org.
