Diving Cocos Island with Okeanos Aggressor

I previously posted about taking the 8 day, mostly land trip to Cocos Island with the Friends of Isla de Coco Foundation and Organization for Tropical Studies, but let’s get real. Most people do not go to Cocos Island just to hike around Cocos dive islandor snorkel. The diving is where it’s at!!!

One of the two main companies who handles dive trips to Cocos Island is Okeanos. The 110–foot Okeanos Aggressor is part of the worldwide Aggressor Fleet, and has been departing from the Pacific port city of Puntarenas to Cocos for the last 20 years.

The trips are open to non-divers, but are geared towards divers, and experience is recommended, as diving on Cocos requires some skill. Night dives, deep dives, and drift dives are all on the menu when it comes to diving at Cocos.

For less experienced divers Okeanos offers assistance, and they even host advanced diving courses and specialty courses. The are approved to certify divers to dive with nitrox, a nitrogen-oxygen gas mixture that is commonly used for extended dives on Cocos. They also offer courses in underwater photography, which can prove to be quite beneficial in capturing the breathtaking beauty of Cocos.

Trips with Okeanos are either 8 or 10 days long and range in price from $3,335 to $3,735. Residents of Costa Rica receive a discounted price of $2,335. While on the trip 4 dives are done daily at Okeanos aggressor image by Carolyndifferent sites around the island, and three fancy buffet meals are served. Snacks and movies play in the ship’s common area.

A trip to Cocos is so amazing, not only because of the Island itself, with its diverse wildlife and virtually untouched land, nor because of what lies below the surface of the water in the form of incredible dives, but because of the tranquility you will feel being completely disconnected from the hectic pace of everyday life. It is a vacation like no other.
