One major hotel located in downtown San Jose is the Crowne Plaza. This is one of the nicer hotels in San Jose. The staff is very kind and helpful and most speak English. When you arrive at the hotel if you have a car they have a very large parking lot, though the lot is not gated there is twenty four hour security. The security staff is very friendly and love helping gringos with learning Spanish. Taxis are available right in front of the
hotel and there are also tons of bus stops close by. When you go to the front desk you will notice that currency exchange is offered right in the hotel (although beware, it is not the best rate). The hotel offers two restaurants, stores, swimming pool, a fitness center and 24 hour room service.
The Gourmet Japanese restaurant “Fuji” is delicious and seems to be a favorite of local business people. The sushi is made fresh to order. My favorite is their spicy tuna. The dessert was surprisingly delicious. I normally don’t order dessert, but I licked my plate clean; it was strawberry shortcake. (Don’t try the Tiramisu; it was terrible!)
The other restaurant, “El Tucan,” is a mixture between typical American and Costa Rican food. As a priority club member, you will be provided with free breakfast buffet at this restaurant. There is also a lobby bar named “La Guacamaya”, where you can drink and socialize.
The hotel has a souvenir shop that offers many different items most of which are way over priced. There is an outdoor swimming pool that is large and beautiful, but not heated which means it is rarely used. Near the pool there is a casino with a variety of games and slot machines. The fitness center is wonderful - they have a large variety of work out machines and they offer aerobic classes. At the fitness center you can also find a steam room and a Jacuzzi. There is also a health bar where you can get smoothies, health shakes and many healthy snacks. The only down side is that the fitness center is not open 24 hours.
The rooms were clean and neat and had cable TV, a safety deposit box, AC, telephone and a mini bar. You can order room service from both “Fuji” and “El Tucan”. The beds are comfortable and maid services come by at times to give
you little pre-packaged “Britt” chocolates and ask if you need anything, such as toothbrush, comb, etc. They are very helpful and hospitable. I was staying at this hotel during the recent earthquake, and one of the elevators broke down. Within 24 hours they had the elevator back up and running. They also made sure that someone was standing near the elevator for the safety of their clients.
Overalll I felt that the entire staff was very attentive to my needs during my stay. The Crowne Plaza hotel is a bit pricy for walk-ins, but if you browse enough online you may come across a deal.
