Bulk Shopping at Price Smart in San Jose

After I moved to Costa Rica one of the things I missed the most was the abundant supply of Price_smart_signCostcos and Sam’s Clubs that we have in the states. In Costa Rica you can find a ton of mom and pop stores and at most of these can find all most everything you want, but what happens when you don’t what to travel to four different stores to go grocery shopping? Or what if there is an item that you just have not been able to find anywhere else.

In San Jose you can find your one stop shop called Price Smart. Just like Costco or Sam’s Club you need a membership to shop there and just like them it is not hard to let someone borrow you membership card. Though the membership card does have your picture on it most people don’t care if it is your photo on the card, they just care if you have money.

Price Smart has a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, meats, electronics, clothes and much more. Their pricing on electronics is about average for most electronics in Costa Rica but they have a nice variety. You can find mp3 players; televisions and video game systems even ink cartridges. I also found a great variety of meat from turkey to filet mingnon. These are both delicacies that I have not been able to find anywhere else in the country.

Another thing is that in Costa Rica drinking coffee is a daily ritual which means if you’re like me you may want cream with your coffee. Price Smart is the only place that I have been able to find International Delights liquid creamer.

Also I was able to find a wide variety of candies and chocolates. What I have found is normally most candies and chocolates in Costa Rica taste as if they had been sitting on a shelf for years.

Another thing you may be concerned about is the environment and the economy. A good way to help with both is to use energy efficient light bulbs.

I own a small dog and recently he has out grown his bed. As I looked through Price Smart I was pleased to find a whole isle devoted to our beloved companions. I was able to buy a large doggy bed for forty dollars and bacon strip puppy treats for two dollars a bag.

One thing I loved about Price Smart is that I was able to pay with a credit card. This is something that many other well known similar stores in the states wouldn’t let you do. So plan a trip to San Jose and bring a truck to load up at Price Smart.

What does it cost to join Price Smart in San Jose, Costa Rica? What kind of documents must we show to get a membership? Can we shop there the same day we apply?

    Thank you!
