Zarcero is located just outside of Naranjo if you are traveling to Ciudad Quesada. Zarcero has captured the hearts of many people for several reasons; first of all being that the Climate is much cooler than other parts of Costa Rica. When visiting you will want to make sure you have a sweater or a light coat. Its climate is clearly a positive for those who love the country but can’t bear the heat. Due to this, those who have such health issues as Multiple Sclerosis that can worsen with heat may find that Zarcero is not only the place for them to visit but also the place for them to live. Though the climate is much cooler it is still important to remember that Costa Rica is a southern country and can still get very warm at times.
Zarcero in my opinion has some of the best sodas (Costa Rica’s typical style of restaurants) in the country. I was able to order a wide variety of food even including vegetarian cuisines. One thing I really enjoyed is the Jardin de Animales which is literally translated Garden of Animals. This is a famous garden located in the downtown area. It consists of a variety of bushes and shrubs that have been formed into different animals, shapes and even people. It is fun to crawl through some of the larger shaped bushes and discover new shapes. It is also quite a place to stop and take a meal as many of the locals do and take in the scenery. The garden is cared for on a regular basis and in certain areas you are not allowed to touch the bushes.
Due to Zarceros climate you may find that it is quite often rainy or foggy. This is not an issue once in Zarcero but the fog can become quite dense when driving and sometimes brings traffic to a standstill. This means if you are a nervous driver you may wish for someone else to drive. Once you get there you will enjoy going through the farmer’s markets where you can find some of the freshest produce in the area. The market offers a wide variety of vegetables and fruits such as pumpkin and water apples or as they are called in Spanish “manzanas de agua”. Manzanas de agua taste very much like a mixture between an apple and a pear.
When in Zarcero be sure to try some of their delicacies enjoy the sites… I am sure you will have something to write home about.
