Getting Fit at the Fitsimons Gym in San Jose

Ask around in the expat community, there are plenty of gyms to choose from in Costa Rica. If you want to just pump some iron, then look around the barrio, more than likely you will find a small gym without any Gym equipment fitsimonscardio equipment, just some free weights and benches, no membership fees and all the sweaty buff Ticos the place can hold. (Not suggested for women looking to get fit!)

If you’re like me though, you need more motivation than just looking at other guys with muscles twice the size of yours flex in the mirror. I need the energy found in large commercial gyms with trainers, good looking women barely breaking a sweat on treadmills, and TV screens on the walls. I want an Americanesque gym. That is what I found in Fitsimon.

The gym has been open since 1997 and is high up there when it comes to service, excellence, and as would be expected, price. If you want to pay monthly, you pay a start-up fee of $40, and then $70 a month. (Not bad by States standards – it’s what you you’d expect to pay at LifeTime, but here in Costa Rica it’s a bit steep.) You can also pay for the year up front for a total of $670.

If you are only going to be in San Jose for a couple weeks or a month, you can get daily, weekly, or monthly passes.

The gym has a variety of the latest equipment, all in good repair, and a nutritionist, personal trainers and a professional aerobics court are all at your disposal. Other ammenities include a sauna, free parking, wireless internet, access to a computer system designed to track your personal progress, child care and a sports shop and cafeteria.

Fitsimons is open Monday to Friday 5 am to 10 pm, Saturday 7 am to 6 pm and Sunday 9:30 am to 5 pm. It is a decent schedule, but I much prefer 24 hour gyms.
