Want a job with plenty of
vacation time to spend at the beach? Teach English! And what better place to do it than Costa Rica. There is a huge need in Costa Rica for qualified English teachers. Most jobs in Costa Rica require at least a basic understanding of English, so the need for teachers is constantly climbing. What credentials do you need to teach English? Where can you teach English?
Credentials- Most institutions, whether public or private will require a bachelor’s degree in anything. A TESOL/TEFL certificate is not necessary but a sure fire way to get the job. TESOL certifications are available in most universities, online and even here in Costa Rica. Some private schools will also accept teachers with an associate’s degree if they are certified TESOL instructors.
Where- Public schools are always in need of qualified English teachers. Most of the teachers in the public school system have learned English from non-native speakers with poor English skills. As a result, many public school English teachers are not very fluent in English. There are also many private schools that teach every subject in English except for Spanish. Examples are Centro Educativo Bilingue del Caribe in Limon, The Country Day School in Guanacaste and Lincoln School in Heredia. Private institutes for adults like Instituto Universal de Idiomas is also a good option. If you want a more flexible schedule, many have set up their own institutes. Many schools will rent or loan out their classrooms in the evenings. Some take advantage of this opportunity by advertising and hosting a class in a school classroom. In Costa Rica students will pay from $50- $100 USD per month for weekly English classes with a native English speaker.
Teaching jobs in Costa Rica are ripe for the picking. Move to Costa Rica, teach English and have plenty of free time to enjoy the real reason why you moved to Costa Rica.
