Some of the main questions for those considering living in Costa Rica are: Will I be able to find my favorite foods? Can I feel safe drinking the water? Where should I go if I get sick? The answers are simple and will probably put to rest any doubts about living in Costa Rica.
Will I be able to find my favorite foods?
When it comes to finding your favorite foods here in Costa Rica, it really depends on where you live. Stores like Pricesmart and Hipermas, located in the Central Valley, are very similar to Costco or Sam’s Club and sell bulk items. Other local supermarkets like MaxiBodega, Jumbo and MegaSuper, offer many popular foreign foods and goods. You
Where should I eat in Costa Rica? The simple answer is go where the locals go. In any country a restaurant’s mark of excellence is how busy they are. You will probably find that there are an incredible array of options when it comes to food: European, Mediterranean, Asian, American, and local. How can you choose? Here are two local favorites that are sure to impress:
Restaurant Las Delicias del Maiz is famous for their delicious corn dishes and pork BBQ. They are located in La Garita de Alajuela on the road to Jaco beach. This open air log cabin is decorated by typical Costa Rican ox carts, and wood sculptures. The atmosphere is relaxed and the Read more
If you are Zarcero and you want to eat at the best Soda I have ever been to please stop and visit Rancho Tipico Zarcereño. Located just outside Zarcero on your way to Naranjo on the right hand side is where you can find some wonderful typical Costa Rican food. With many benches to sit at its all wood furnishing and its climate you may find this a perfect place to stop to eat.
I ordered a dish called Olla de Carne which is a soup that consists of beef and a variety of vegetables with a side of white rice. When I ordered at Rancho Tipico I received what must have been a punch bowl filled with the Read more
San Pedro Mall is one of the largest malls in the San Jose area. Though many people feel that this is one of the greatest malls in the area, in my personal opinion I find this not to be true. My feeling is this mall has nothing more to offer than cell phones, video games and clothes. If you are looking for a variety of stores, than this is not the place for you to go. For a four level mall I was surprised that they didn’t have more to offer.
I did find three nice things about the mall first of which is on the fourth floor they have a complete workout center. It has spinning Read more
As airports go, San Jose international (SJO) is one of the best that I have ever had the pleasure of flying in and out of. Though a rather small airport in comparison with other travel destinations, it is very well maintained. The bathrooms are very clean and well kempt as routine cleaning is done regularly. As far as food goes, don’t expect the dozens of choices you would find at most larger airports but it is modestly equipped with a Burger King, Church’s Chicken, Papa John’s Pizza and a small salad and sandwich shop. As is normal with most airport food, expect to pay extra for the “convenience” of having options within the airport. If you do decide to eat Read more
The Brazilians have stolen my heart, as well as my stomach. I love food. Let me rephrase that, all kinds of foods, but especially those that involve meat. Since I’ve been living in Costa Rica, I’ve notice that you can’t find a decent piece of steak. They tend to be thin, flimsy and lack the juice I crave. I am happy to say that I have found a place where you can find the best red meat there is in Costa Rica.
Fogo Brazil is a Brazilian Churrascaria steak house where you sit and eat, and eat, and eat. At this Churrascaria they roast meats over an open fire for a delicious smokey grilled flavor.
In the entire country of Costa Rica there are only two Indian restaurants. Out of the two my favorite is Taj Mahal restaurant located in Santa Ana. I wouldn’t suggest traveling by taxi to get there, since not many taxis travel in this area which may make it hard to get a taxi back to your hotel. (If you do decide to take a taxi, get their cell number and then just give a call when you are through.)
This restaurant offers many delicious Indian delicacies all made with the freshest ingredients. Their naan bread is made fresh in a special oven when ordered. You can sit outside in
There are a ton of different ways to go about getting information regarding traveling to and living in Costa Rica. But how do you know the information is reliable? Plenty of you have e-mailed asking for information, but as you know… I don’t always find the time to answer, and sometimes I just don’t have the answers! I can, however, connect you with the people who do have the answers!
I, together with all the other Gringo writers (see my blogroll for affiliate sites) have worked to create a database that puts you in contact with the people you need to reach in Panama (and Guatemala, Costa Rica, Argentina, Ecuador, El Salvador and more!)
If you are looking for legal services, real Read more
My mom always said, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” This is why San Jose has found a special place in my heart. San Jose has some of the most popular restaurants in all of Costa Rica. You can find a wide variety of restaurants from Benihana’s to Church’s Chicken, but what I love even more is finding hidden treasures. In Sabana Norte you can find a Lebanese restaurant called “Beirut”. This Lebanese restaurant is located in a small shopping center, so small in fact if you were walking on the street you might just miss it. When you first enter the restaurant the owner who speaks Spanish, English and Lebanese will greet you with Read more
